Choosing the right industrial pressure gauge is essential for reliable readings, long service life, and safe operation. A gauge suitable for clean water may not work well with corrosive chemicals, viscous fluids, high-temperature media, or strong mechanical vibration.

Before selecting a model, consider the process medium, operating temperature, pressure range, required accuracy, wetted materials, connection, and installation environment.

1. Select the Pressure Gauge Based on the Process Medium

The process medium is one of the most important factors in pressure gauge selection. Corrosion, viscosity, suspended particles, and crystallization can damage the sensing element or block the pressure connection.

Working condition

Recommended gauge type

Key consideration

Clean water, air, and non-corrosive media

General pressure gauge

Confirm wetted-material compatibility

Corrosive liquids or gases

Stainless steel or diaphragm pressure gauge

Select compatible diaphragm, connection, and sealing materials

Viscous, crystallizing, or particle-containing media

Diaphragm seal pressure gauge

Isolate the sensing element from the process medium

Low-pressure gas measurement

Capsule pressure gauge

Confirm the required low-pressure range

Food, beverage, and pharmaceutical processes

Sanitary diaphragm pressure gauge

Confirm hygienic connection and material requirements

For corrosive media, do not select a gauge based only on the case material. The process connection, sensing element, diaphragm, and seals must also be compatible with the medium.

For viscous or clogging media, a diaphragm seal can provide a barrier between the process and the gauge mechanism. Confirm that the diaphragm design is suitable for the medium and pressure range.

2. Consider Process Temperature and Ambient Conditions

Temperature can affect the sensing element, case filling, seals, and measurement stability. Check both the process temperature and the ambient temperature around the gauge.

  • High-temperature media: Consider a suitable high-temperature design, cooling or heat-dissipation structure, or a compatible remote diaphragm seal arrangement.

  • High vibration or pressure pulsation: A liquid-filled pressure gauge can help stabilize pointer movement and reduce vibration-related wear.

  • Outdoor or humid environments: Check the case material and ingress protection rating.

  • Corrosive surroundings: Consider a suitable corrosion-resistant case and protective construction.

A liquid-filled gauge is not automatically suitable for every high-temperature application. The fill liquid, temperature limits, seals, and gauge design must match the actual operating conditions.

3. Choose the Correct Pressure Range

The pressure range should cover normal operating pressure while allowing for expected fluctuations and pressure surges.

As a general selection guideline, the normal operating pressure should fall within a suitable portion of the dial scale. Ashcroft references an operating range of approximately 25%–75% of full scale for many applications. For significant pulsation, a more conservative range may be necessary. Always follow the applicable standard and the manufacturer's instructions.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • Normal operating pressure.

  • Minimum and maximum pressure.

  • Pressure spikes and pulsation.

  • Gauge pressure, vacuum, or compound pressure requirements.

  • Overpressure and cyclic loading conditions.

Avoid selecting a gauge with a range that is too low, as this may expose the sensing element to excessive stress. An unnecessarily high range can also make readings difficult to interpret.

4. Select the Required Accuracy and Dial Size

Accuracy and dial size should match the measurement task and the viewing distance.

Accuracy class: General industrial monitoring may use a standard accuracy class, while testing, calibration, or critical processes may require higher accuracy. Choose according to the process tolerance and applicable requirements.

Dial size: Common sizes include 60 mm, 100 mm, and 150 mm, depending on the product series.

  • Choose a larger dial when the gauge must be read from a distance.

  • Consider the scale spacing and readability when higher accuracy is required.

  • Confirm that the dial range and units match the operating requirements.

A larger dial does not automatically guarantee higher accuracy. Check the specified accuracy class for the selected model.

5. Choose Wetted Materials and Diaphragm Seals

The wetted parts are the components that contact the process medium. Material selection should consider chemical composition, concentration, temperature, and pressure.

Material or design

Typical selection consideration

Copper alloy

Suitable for compatible, non-aggressive media

304 / 316L stainless steel

Common industrial options; verify compatibility with the specific medium

Corrosion-resistant alloys

For selected aggressive chemical applications

PTFE-lined construction

For certain corrosive media, subject to design limits

Diaphragm seal

Helps isolate the gauge from corrosive, viscous, crystallizing, or clogging media

For diaphragm pressure gauges, confirm the diaphragm material, flange or process connection, and sealing material. Options may include stainless steel, PTFE, or specialized alloys, depending on the product design.

Important: No single material is suitable for every chemical. Verify the exact medium and operating conditions before confirming the gauge configuration.

6. Confirm the Connection and Installation Direction

The process connection must match the equipment connection and available installation space.

Check the following details before ordering:

  • Thread standard: For example, M20×1.5, G1/2, or 1/2 NPT. These are different standards and should not be assumed interchangeable.

  • Connection position: Bottom connection or back connection.

  • Mounting arrangement: Direct mounting, panel mounting, or another supported arrangement.

  • Flange or sanitary connection: Confirm the applicable size, standard, and sealing interface.

  • Dial visibility: Ensure the gauge can be read and maintained safely after installation.

Incorrect thread selection or unsuitable mounting can cause installation problems, leakage, or poor readability.

7. Check Whether You Need Electrical Contacts or Explosion Protection

A standard mechanical pressure gauge provides local indication. Some models offer additional functions.

Electric contact pressure gauge: Provides local pressure indication and electrical switching when the pointer reaches a preset threshold. It may be used for alarms, interlocks, or control functions when correctly configured.

Explosion-protected gauge: If the installation is in a hazardous area, confirm the required certification, protection method, and installation conditions. Do not assume that an ordinary pressure gauge is suitable for a hazardous area.
